Blog posts have been few and far between over here during this busy holiday season. . . but I’m here today with another Quick Lit post! I’m linking this one up with Modern Mrs. Darcy to share some short book reviews of what I’ve read so far this month!
What I’m Reading
Infected by Scott Sigler
Just ewwwww. First off, the disclaimer: this is not great literature. Don’t read this for the exquisite prose. This is pure plot-driven, shock-horror science-fiction. Think Nick Cutter’s The Troop, but even more disgusting. This one’s about a disease/alien invasion that’s turning people into homicidal maniacs. There are blood and guts on every page. So if that’s not up your alley, don’t even bother. I liked how much of a page turner this was, but I wasn’t thrilled with the ending, so I bumped it down to 3 stars. There are more in the series, but I’m not sure I want to invest that much more time. 3/5 stars
Today Will Be Different by Maria Semple
Wow, could I relate. Eleanor’s life is a mess, even though she’s 40-something and supposed to have her act together. There are some seriously laugh-out-loud funny moments in this novel, even though there are some difficult waters to navigate as Eleanor revisits old family wounds. I love Semple’s quirky writing style and I enjoyed this book tremendously. 4/5 stars
Hillbilly Elegy by J.D. Vance
This memoir is all the rage right now since the recent election results, and it was insightful for sure. It helped me to understand the mindset of poor, rural white America. . . but I’m still shaking my head over it. The writing was okay, but not great. 3/5 stars
The Bookshop on the Corner by Jenny Colgan
Yes, yes, yes!! This is a fluffy little book with lots of sugar on top and I adored it. Absolute, pure unadulterated chick lit that made me want to sell all my stuff, move to Scotland and open a mobile bookstore. And can I just say, the romantic interest in this story — a Scottish farmer named Lennox — absolutely made the novel for me. He’s like a mashup of Wuthering Heights’ Heathcliff and Jamie Fraser from Outlander. Mmmmmm. . . dreamy. 5/5 stars
That’s it so far for December! What about you? Want to share some titles with me? What are you reading lately that you absolutely can’t put down?
