So I lied to you last week. Gave you a teaser for a post that never came.
I could line up a long list of excuses, but the truth is this: I waited till the last minute, then Thursday evening while I was making dinner, the local animal shelter called me. The lady on the phone told me she had my dog and it looked like she’d been hit by a car.
Needless to say, I turned off the burner and rushed right over. Fortunately we have a church friend who’s a vet. We took her to his house, he examined her and told us she was just banged up a little, but with no broken bones. So we came home.
The dog’s still a little tentative on the one leg that was hurt most, but we got lucky. We’re still not sure how she got out, but my guess is lots of kids home for the summer, a door left open at some point, and a sneaky little terrier who likes to run.
And. . . after all that, y’all, I was too exhausted to even think about writing a blog post.
Anyway, I’m super excited to FINALLY share today’s post with you.
The Secret Garden Revealed
I’ve been working on this little courtyard for years now and I’ve finally got it pulled together. This is NOT our backyard. It’s actually a side yard that would be wasted space, except the previous owners installed a patio, French doors and a fence to turn it into a nice little courtyard. It’s a lovely space where I can retreat from the house and read or have a cup of coffee.
It’s not perfect, but it’s mine and I love it.
Here’s what you see when you first walk out. This is during the middle of the day when the grassy area gets a lot of sun, so it’s quite bright. But you get the idea.
Here’s the view if you turn back toward the French doors. My patio furniture is a mishmash of things I’ve collected over the years. Same with the rug, the planters, and all the other decorative touches.
This year, I wanted to add an outdoor sofa to the mix. . . some place where I could lie down and read. I found this gem on clearance online at Target and I snatched it up. Can you tell how much I love the color green?
Here’s the sofa from a different angle.
Here’s a sampling of what you might see if you walk out into the courtyard a little further.
And now some pictures taken at dusk. I’m in love with ferns, even though they have to be watered every single day. Do you see that naughty little Boston terrier in the picture? Yeah, she’s my watering buddy. She loves to play in the hose spray.
Here’s another shot taken at dusk. It looks brighter because I had to adjust the photo so you could see the details. The lights are plain outdoor Christmas lights with clear bulbs. Nothing fancy. The tree is a live oak and — much as I love trees and I appreciate the shade — this one is a pain. Live oaks drop leaves year round and shower us with millions of hard little acorns every spring. So it’s impossible to keep this area clean!
I swept it right before taking these photos, and there are still leaves in the photos. Also, I think that might be my finger in the upper right corner of this pic. Oops.
And then when it’s time to go back inside, here’s a closer shot of the French doors. I painted them black a few years ago. I love the contrast between the black doors and the off-white trim. Also, notice the key? I’m in love with it.
And there you have it, my secret garden revealed in all its glory!
The only thing about it I haven’t quite figured out is the mosquito situation. I have citronella candles and a torch, but I still have to spray myself every time I go out there to keep from getting devoured.
It’s worth it, though. This garden is a keeper!
Hope you enjoyed the tour!
