Happy Father’s Day! It’s time for links, a recap of the week’s posts, and stuff I’m totally loving this week!
“I truly believe that this is the defining issue of our generation. Can we be brave? Can we be strong? Can we be kind and, perhaps, even happy, in the face of atrocious acts of hate and terrorism? Do we find a way to unite? Or do these atrocities further corrode and divide our torn nation?”
How We Summer (This Week) by Shannan Martin
“The sun on my face, wind in my unwashed hair, my kids lapping me on their bikes, high-fiving me as they zoomed past, it was so clear. I don’t want to take this for granted. The months are short and the heat bakes it all permanently into our hearts and cerebral cortexes. Summer is the sweet spot, so we might as well act like it.”
An Open Letter to Perfect Parents: Put Down Your Pitchforks by Melissa Fenton at Scary Mommy
“And how are accidents allowed to happen if we can’t blame someone? Surely, they can’t, right? I mean, random acts of nature, unpreventable tragedies, and fateful life-changing events that take place in a matter of nanoseconds cannot possibly take place if everyone is being a responsible parent, right? Nope.
They can’t, because this country and its population of perfect pitchfork-carrying mothers and fathers sitting behind keyboards needs to accuse. They need to blame, to disparage, to criticize in every damn way and at every damn corner the parenting of another.”
Gush, I love reading! Especially in the summertime! Here’s what I’ve plowed through so far!
In which the heat index was 103º today and I’m already second guessing myself. . .
What I’m Loving this Week:
1. Blackberry Cobbler
My blackberry vines are producing like crazy, so I made a cobbler this week and we devoured it along with some Bluebell Homemade Vanilla. It was so delish!!
2. Sleeping Late
I’m a vocal fan of early mornings, but these last two weeks have been filled with the guilty pleasure of sleeping in. It. Has. Been. Glorious.
I’ll have to go back to early next week, since my earliest riser will be home and he’ll have electronics and food scattered housewide by 8:00 a.m. if I’m not up to patrol his every movement. Sigh.
4. Sunless tanning bronzer
I took my little guy to the water park this week, so I had to put on a swimsuit for the first time in 2016. Never a fun activity. I used this stuff the night before, though, so it helped lesson the shock of seeing my bare, white legs at least a little.
I use this Tanwise Dark Bronzing Sunless Mousse and it works really well! Plus it doesn’t stink!
Um, yum! I made this lovely skillet meal and served it with plain buttered spaghetti noodles and some green beans. This was divine. Definitely not lo-cal, but a keeper for my recipe book!
6. This postcard.
My son with Asperger’s was at camp this week, and apparently they made the kids write a postcard home. This was ours. I died laughing when I saw it. True to his Aspie self, he’s straight to the point. No flowery language here. Not even a signature!
This Week’s Lyrics for Life:
I used to sing this song to the twins when they were babies, swaying their little feet in time with the music and tickling them at the end. This hymn is an oldie, one I remember singing as a child in the 70s. It only just hit me this week how the lyric “Jesus loves even me” is so true. Even me. Even at my most unlovable. What a wonder!
Jesus Loves Even Me by Philip P. Bliss
I am so glad that our Father in Heav’n
Tells of His love in the Book He has giv’n;
Wonderful things in the Bible I see,
This is the dearest, that Jesus loves me.
I am so glad that Jesus loves me,
Jesus loves me, Jesus loves me;
I am so glad that Jesus loves me,
Jesus loves even me.
My prayer this week is that you’ll know how much you are loved. Jesus loves you. Yes. Even you.
