Some people are snowed in. I realize this. I know there have been huge blizzards blowing through part of the country.
But not here.
In fact, yesterday was Groundhog Day, and the groundhog says “No more winter!” But the truth is, winter hasn’t even shown up yet around these parts. We’ve dipped down to freezing a couple of times, but just barely. I’ve still got green stuff growing in the yard.
Knowing Texas, we’ll probably have an ice storm in April.
Anyway, it’s winter nonetheless. It may not be cold, but the days are shorter, the trees are bare, and the dreary days have arrived. So today I’m sharing what’s saving my life right now. . . the little things that make the difficult days a tad easier.
I’m linking this post up with Anne Bogel over at Modern Mrs. Darcy where other bloggers are sharing their ideas for making it through the winter as well.
What’s Saving My Life Right Now
I never ever ever thought I’d say it, but a morning cup of coffee is the best incentive I can think of to get out of bed. It’s only been a little over a year since I quit Diet Coke, and I didn’t think I could ever become a coffee drinker, but I’ve been converted. I’m officially a grownup!
2. The Book of Common Prayer
It’s true: laughter really is the best medicine. I’m trying my best to incorporate humor into every day. Sometimes it’s hard because we’re busy and there are so many tasks to get done. And without my nightly Jon Stewart (sob!), finding stuff to make me laugh is more challenging.
And of course there are my kids. They make me laugh almost every day.
4. Comfortable Clothes
I’m not sure why it took me so long to finally decide that uncomfortable clothes just aren’t worth the trouble. Maybe it’s because I was trying so hard to squeeze into styles that fit great when I was 30-something.
Well, I’m in the throes of the 40s now, and I’m — let’s say “softer” (wink, wink) — than I was back then. And ain’t nobody got time for pants that cut off your circulation and shirts that feel like the seams are going to rip out if you try to move.
I’m completely and wholeheartedly on the tunics and leggings bandwagon and here’s to hoping this style sticks around for a long time.
People of the north, I apologize. I’ve taken this beautiful year-round sunshine for granted all my life. I didn’t even realize it wasn’t available to everyone until my neighbor from Ohio mentioned it. Even when it gets cold here, we have sun. It makes winter so much easier.
6. My new mattress and memory foam pillow
It’s not Tempurpedic brand, but it’s similar. We got a new mattress back in April when we had water damage, and I bought the matching pillows. I’ve always been a down pillow kind of girl, but I started using the memory foam pillow and between it and the new mattress, I almost never have back pain anymore. It just dawned on me this week that even with all the piano playing I’ve been doing, my back is holding up great.
7. Playing games with the kids
I love when we can get the whole family involved in a fun game around the table. Or on the Playstation. Nothing makes Travis happier than when I sit down and play video games with him.
8. Method fabric softener
I added this to my ePantry order a while back and I’m smitten with it. It smells like springtime in a bottle. I especially love using it to wash my sheets. If you want to try out ePantry, click here to get $10 off your first order.
These up the cozy factor at home by about 1000%. Plus they help with all the stinky smells that come with having a house full of kids and pets. If we’re at home, I’m burning a candle. They save my nose and my sanity.
So what about you? How are you making through the winter?
