Last year I wrote an entire series on some of my favorite Christmas music ever. This year I thought I’d lump it into one post for your listening pleasure.
In case you’ve just stumbled upon this blog and don’t know it already, I am a musician. I’ve been singing since I can remember, learned to play the piano at age six, and have spent the last 30+ years as a performer and music educator.
And I’ll let you in on a little secret that my family already knows: I’m a complete musical snob.
I’m sorry (not sorry.) I truly can’t help myself. If you cut me open, instead of blood, I swear that music would ooze out of my veins.
Unfortunately for us all, there is a lot of BAD Christmas music out there. Not only that, but the radio stations always seem to get stuck on a few songs that they play ad nauseum. I mean, I love Brenda Lee’s “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree,” but not when I hear it sixty times a day. No thanks, Pandora.
So today I am here to offer my services free of charge. I will put you in touch with some truly meaningful, beautiful Christmas music, just in time to rescue you from all the noisy, nerve-wrecking holiday tunes.
First off, if you haven’t read my Christmas music series from last year, here are the links to those posts, each featuring a different Christmas song:
- Breath of Heaven: When Life Is Shattered, Who Will Hold Me Together?
- The Little Drummer Boy: He Was a Poor Boy, Too
- Rose of Bethlehem: Born to Wear the Thorns for Me
- A Baby Changes Everything: My Whole Life Has Turned Around
- O Holy Night: ‘Til He Appeared and the Soul Felt Its Worth
Then there are these posts I wrote in 2013 about some other favorites:
There are a million other posts I could write. I will spare you. You’re welcome.
Instead, I’ve compiled a couple of playlists on Spotify. Hopefully they will offer you a respite from some of the overplayed stuff out there. The first playlist is for ordinary people who like fairly ordinary music.
The second is for nerds like me who appreciate beautiful choral singing. (You are my people!) You won’t hear more lovely Christmas music than that second playlist, but I understand it’s not for everyone.
I’ve chosen some of my personal favorites, especially those with poignant lyrics. There is not a single rendition of “Jingle Bell Rock” or “Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree” in the bunch. While all these tracks may not be songs you haven’t heard, I promise you they’re not the ones being played on endless repeat at the mall.
So enjoy!! And Merry Christmas!
